About Jämtland
Östersund is the capital of Jämtland County and the only city in Sweden's Jämtland region, built along the eastern shore of Lake Storsjön. Known as the Winter City, it blends a compact, walkable centre with easy access to lakes, forests and mountain landscapes.
Founded in 1786 by King Gustav III, the city was originally intended as a trading centre for Jämtland. It remained small until the railway arrived in the late 19th century, when it grew into the regional hub it is today. Historic layers remain visible in the older streets and buildings around the centre, while the island of Frösön preserves centuries of settlement history.
Jamtli open-air museum is the city's best-known attraction, presenting Jämtland history through buildings, exhibitions and seasonal events. Other landmarks include Östersund City Hall, the lakefront Badhusparken and the Östersund Ski Stadium, which hosts biathlon and cross-country events. Lake Storsjön is central to local life, and the legend of the Storsjöodjuret lake monster is part of the area's folklore.
The city centre around Stortorget and Prästgatan offers shops, cafés and restaurants within walking distance. Across the bridge, Frösön provides quieter residential areas, lake views, the Frösö Church and a popular hillside ski slope. Further out, neighbourhoods such as Odensala and Lugnvik serve mostly as residential districts with local services.
Östersund is also a centre for education, public administration and winter sports, with a Mid Sweden University campus and several national and international competitions held in the area. Its UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy designation reflects a strong local food culture built on produce such as lake char, moose, reindeer, wild mushrooms and Jämtland cheeses. The Storsjöyran music festival in late July brings tens of thousands of visitors, while winter activities and proximity to Åre make the city relevant for both leisure and business travellers.
