About Ames Municipal Airport

Ames Municipal Airport is a public general aviation airport serving Ames, Iowa, and the surrounding Story County region. Located about two miles southeast of downtown Ames, the airport supports private, business, charter, and flight-training aviation for the city, Iowa State University, and central Iowa.

The airport was created after a 1943 city vote and originally consisted of two turf runways. A modernization effort completed in 2017 added a new terminal and hangar, and Central Iowa Air Service became the airport's fixed-base operator.

The airport covers about 700 acres and has two paved runways, 1/19 and 13/31. It handles general aviation, air taxi, and occasional military operations, with based aircraft including single-engine, multi-engine, jets, gliders, and ultralights.

While AMW has no scheduled airline service, commercial flights are available about 30 miles south at Des Moines International Airport. Its location close to the city makes Ames Municipal Airport a convenient gateway for general aviation travelers arriving in central Iowa.
