About Allen Army Airfield
Allen Army Airfield (BIG) is a joint-use military and civilian airfield serving Fort Greely and the Delta Junction area of interior Alaska. Established in 1942 as Big Delta Army Airfield, it was later renamed Allen Army Airfield, with Fort Greely built south of the airfield after World War II.
Located about 3 miles (5 km) south of Delta Junction, the airfield supports military aviation, charter, private and general aviation traffic rather than scheduled commercial flights. Its longest runway, 01/19, is approximately 9,000 feet of asphalt, with three paved runways serving the installation.
The airfield sits near the Richardson Highway and the northern terminus of the Alaska Highway, with Fairbanks roughly 100 miles (160 km) to the northwest. Most travelers continue by private vehicle, pre-arranged transfer or rental car.
Passenger facilities are limited to base operations, transient parking and flight-planning support, so visitors usually use nearby Delta Junction for fuel, lodging and dining. Advance planning is recommended for travel to and from this remote interior Alaska location.
