About Akureyri International Airport

Akureyri International Airport is the main airport serving Akureyri and the gateway to North Iceland. Located about 3 km south of the town centre at the head of Eyjafjörður, it is operated by Isavia and is one of Iceland's international airports, though most of its traffic is domestic.

The airport opened in 1954 and has grown alongside Akureyri's role as a regional centre. In December 2024, on the airport's 70th anniversary, an expanded terminal and new apron were inaugurated, increasing capacity to around 500,000 passengers a year and allowing larger aircraft and more international flights.

Today the airport connects Akureyri with Reykjavík on frequent domestic services and offers seasonal international routes to destinations including Greenland and Copenhagen. The single runway is about 2,400 metres long, and the airport also serves as an alternative landing point for larger Icelandic airports.

Passengers can reach Akureyri town centre in about five minutes by taxi, use local buses, hire a car at the terminal, or walk in roughly 30 minutes when travelling light. The compact terminal provides a bistro, shops, car rental desks and parking.
