Adolfo López Mateos International Airport is the main airport serving Toluca, the capital of the State of Mexico, and also functions as a secondary gateway for the Mexico City metropolitan area. Inaugurated in 1984, it was developed as a reliever airport for Mexico City and has since become an important centre for commercial, cargo and general aviation traffic.
Located about 16 km northeast of central Toluca, the airport sits roughly 40 km from the Santa Fe business district and around 59 km from downtown Mexico City. It is known for its long 4.2 km runway, one of the longest in Mexico, which supports a wide range of aircraft operations.
Passenger services are organized across two adjacent terminals, the Domestic Terminal and the International Terminal, both open 24 hours. The airport is served by low-cost carriers including VivaAerobus and Volaris, and it also handles significant business and general aviation activity.
Ground connections include buses to Mexico City's Observatorio bus terminal, Santa Fe and Cuautitlán Izcalli, as well as taxis, private transfers and car rental. Travel to central Toluca typically takes about 25–40 minutes by road, while the drive to Mexico City takes around 90 minutes depending on traffic.
