About Matabeleland North
Victoria Falls is a small resort town in Matabeleland North province, in north-western Zimbabwe, set on the southern bank of the Zambezi River directly opposite Livingstone, Zambia. It is best known as the gateway to Victoria Falls, or Mosi-oa-Tunya ('the smoke that thunders'), one of the world's largest and most famous waterfalls and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The town grew around the arrival of the railway and the completion of the Victoria Falls Bridge in 1905, which links Zimbabwe and Zambia across the Zambezi gorge. That colonial-era bridge remains a landmark and bungee-jumping site, while the surrounding Victoria Falls National Park and riverside rainforest viewpoints give visitors close views of the falls.
Victoria Falls combines a compact town centre, the high-density residential neighbourhood of Chinotimba and lodge areas along the river. Beyond the falls, attractions include sunset cruises on the Zambezi, white-water rafting, helicopter flights over the gorge, and day safaris in nearby Zambezi National Park or Hwange National Park.
The town's economy is driven by tourism and hospitality, and Victoria Falls International Airport connects it with regional and international destinations. It also hosts conferences, corporate retreats and incentive travel, making it relevant for both leisure visitors and business travellers.
For travellers, Victoria Falls offers a distinctive mix of dramatic natural scenery, adventure activities, wildlife and a relaxed small-town atmosphere on the Zimbabwe side of one of Africa's most celebrated destinations.

Matabeleland North Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from May to October is the most popular time to visit, with mild weather, good wildlife viewing and easier access to viewpoints. The falls are at their fullest from roughly February to May, when heavy spray can obscure parts of the gorge, while lower water between August and November is better for activities such as the Devil's Pool and white-water rafting.
How to Get Around
Victoria Falls town is small and easy to explore on foot, especially around the centre, viewpoints and riverside lodges. Taxis, hotel shuttles and private transfers are widely used for airport journeys and longer trips, while rental cars are useful for visiting Zambezi National Park, Hwange National Park or the Kazungula border area.
Where to Stay
Riverside lodges and hotels along the Zambezi offer high-end stays with views and easy access to sunset cruises, while the town centre has a range of mid-range hotels and guesthouses. Budget travellers often use guesthouses and backpacker lodges in the Chinotimba residential area or near the town centre.
Food & Drink
Victoria Falls offers riverside fine dining, safari-style dinners such as The Boma, and international restaurants alongside Zimbabwean dishes like sadza, grilled meat and fresh produce. Cafés, craft markets and sunset cruise bars add to a food scene geared towards both tourists and residents.
