About Masvingo
Masvingo is the capital of Masvingo Province in southeastern Zimbabwe and the country's oldest colonial settlement, founded in 1890 as Fort Victoria. The city is best known as the gateway to Great Zimbabwe, the ancient stone capital that gave modern Zimbabwe its name and lies about 28 kilometres to the south-east.
The city's history remains visible in its centre, where the Bell Tower marks part of the 1892 fort built to protect early settlers, and tree-lined Robert Mugabe Way passes heritage buildings such as the Victoria Hotel and the High Court. The Mucheke and Shagashe rivers frame the central business district, which is anchored by the nine-storey Zimre Centre.
Beyond the CBD, Masvingo offers easy access to Lake Mutirikwi, the Kyle Recreational Park and Kyle Game Reserve, where visitors can see game including white rhino. Nearby Shagashe Game Park and an Italian memorial chapel built during the Second World War add quieter local excursions, while the Great Zimbabwe National Monument remains the region's defining heritage site.
As a provincial capital and university town, Masvingo combines government and commercial activity with the energy of Great Zimbabwe University students. Suburbs such as Mucheke, home to Mucheke Stadium and Masvingo United football club, and the Charles Austin Theatre in the Civic Centre gardens give the city a distinct local character.
For travellers, Masvingo serves as a practical base for exploring Zimbabwe's most important archaeological landscape and the Lake Mutirikwi area. It is connected by road to Harare in the north and Beitbridge in the south, with Masvingo International Airport supporting regional flights and making the city relevant for both heritage tourism and business.
