About Mashonaland West
Chinhoyi is the capital of Zimbabwe's Mashonaland West Province and a compact city on the A1 road linking Harare with the Chirundu border and Zambia. Known for its university, farming and mining hinterland, the city is a practical base for travellers heading toward Lake Kariba, the Zambezi Valley and the Chinhoyi Caves.
The town began as Sinoia, an Italian group settlement scheme, before being renamed Chinhoyi in 1982. Today it combines provincial administration, education and commerce, and Chinhoyi University of Technology gives the centre a lively, youthful atmosphere during term time.
The best-known attraction is Chinhoyi Caves, a national park about nine kilometres northwest of the centre. Visitors descend into limestone caverns to see the Sleeping Pool, a strikingly clear blue underground lake, and can walk shaded trails around the site.
Much of daily life concentrates around the central business district and the A1 corridor, where shops, banks, markets and minibus ranks serve residents and road travellers. The city's position makes it a convenient stopover for business and leisure trips across Mashonaland West, including routes toward Kariba and nearby tobacco and citrus farming areas.
Although small, Chinhoyi offers a relaxed contrast to Harare. Leisure visitors come for the caves and regional scenery, while business travellers appreciate the university, provincial offices and the city's role as a gateway to northern Zimbabwe.
