About Carabobo
Valencia is the capital of Carabobo state and one of Venezuela's most important industrial and commercial cities, located in the north-central region near the western shore of Lake Valencia. It blends a compact colonial-era historic centre with a fast-growing modern urban area.
Founded in 1555 as Nueva Valencia del Rey, the city served as Venezuela's capital on three occasions between 1812 and 1858. Its place in independence history is marked by the nearby Campo de Carabobo, where the decisive Battle of Carabobo was fought in 1821.
The historic centre is anchored by Plaza Bolívar, surrounded by the Valencia Cathedral, the Municipal Theatre, Casa Páez and the 18th-century Casa de los Celis. The University of Carabobo, dating from 1852, remains a major educational and cultural institution.
Neighbourhoods such as Naguanagua and San Diego offer parks, shopping centres and residential areas beyond the centre, while Parque Fernando Peñalver provides green space for recreation. The city's food scene spans Venezuelan staples, cafés and restaurants.
As a leading centre for manufacturing, trade and business events, Valencia draws corporate travellers, while its museums, monuments and access to Carabobo's coastal and mountain attractions also appeal to leisure visitors.
