About Shefa
Port Vila is the capital and largest city of Vanuatu, located on a natural harbour along the southwest coast of Efate in Shefa Province. With a relaxed Pacific setting, it combines a Melanesian cultural base with French and British colonial influences, creating a distinctive South Pacific capital that serves as the country's main commercial and government centre.
The city grew from a small Melanesian settlement and later became the administrative hub of the Anglo-French New Hebrides condominium. Vanuatu gained independence in 1980 and Port Vila became the capital. Traces of this history remain in Independence Park, the former French Residency and the Supreme Court, while the Vanuatu National Museum records the islands' cultural heritage.
Landmarks include the Sacré Coeur Cathedral, Parliament House and the busy waterfront along Lini Highway, which looks over Vila Bay and nearby islands. Port Vila Market is a focal point for fresh produce, handicrafts and daily island life, while Mele Cascades and Erakor Lagoon offer accessible nature experiences close to town.
The city is Vanuatu's main gateway for tourism, trade and administration. Cruise ships, hotels, restaurants, dive operators and island tours are concentrated here, and many visitors use Port Vila as a base for exploring Efate and connecting to the outer islands.
Neighbourhoods around the bay, Nambatu, Erakor and Pango each offer a different mix of waterfront resorts, local dining and quiet residential streets. For both leisure and business travellers, Port Vila combines essential services, a growing events scene and an easygoing Pacific atmosphere in one compact coastal capital.
