About Bauerfield International Airport
Bauerfield International Airport is the main international gateway to Vanuatu, serving the capital Port Vila and the island of Efate. It handles scheduled flights from regional destinations including Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, New Caledonia and the Solomon Islands, and connects travelers to domestic flights across the archipelago.
The airfield has its origins in World War II, when it was established in 1942 as a United States military airfield and later named after Lieutenant Colonel Harold W. Bauer, a US Marine Corps fighter pilot lost during the Battle of Guadalcanal. The current international passenger terminal was built in 1991, and the airport has since developed into the country's primary aviation link.
Located about 6 km north of central Port Vila, the airport is typically a 15–20 minute drive from the city centre. Travelers can continue by taxi, hotel transfer, rental car or the colorful local minibuses known as Vila buses.
Passenger facilities remain modest but functional, with an international terminal, a smaller domestic terminal a short walk away, a café, shops, currency exchange, ATMs and a departure lounge.
