About Montevideo

Montevideo is Uruguay's capital and largest city, set on the north shore of the Río de la Plata estuary. It combines a relaxed South American pace with European-influenced architecture, a strong café and literary culture and one of the region's most progressive social outlooks. The long coastal Rambla frames beaches, parks and residential neighbourhoods, giving the city much of its everyday character.

Founded by the Spanish in 1726 as San Felipe y Santiago de Montevideo, the city grew around a strategic port and later became the capital of independent Uruguay in 1828. Its layered history is visible in landmarks such as Plaza Independencia, the 1928 Palacio Salvo, the 19th-century Teatro Solís, the hilltop Fortaleza del Cerro and Estadio Centenario, built for the first FIFA World Cup in 1930.

Ciudad Vieja, the historic core, holds museums, galleries, colonial streets and the lively Mercado del Puerto, famous for asado and parrillas. The Centro is the commercial heart along Avenida 18 de Julio, while Pocitos and Punta Carretas offer beachfront promenades, shops and cafés. Barrio Sur and Palermo are associated with candombe and the city's long Carnival tradition, and Carrasco is a quiet, leafy residential area near the airport.

Montevideo is also Uruguay's economic and logistics centre: its port handles much of the country's trade, and the city hosts the Mercosur administrative headquarters along with growing technology, services and free-trade-zone activity. Its event calendar ranges from the weeks-long Carnival and Las Llamadas parades to music, film and gastronomy festivals that draw both regional and international visitors.

The food and drink scene centres on asado, the chivito sandwich, local Tannat wines and a deep mate culture. Together with riverside beaches, green parks and an easygoing daily rhythm, these qualities make Montevideo a comfortable base for leisure travellers and business visitors alike.
