About Durazno

Durazno is the capital of Durazno Department in central Uruguay, set along the Yí River and often called the heart of the country because of its central position. The city takes its name from the Spanish word for peach, and it combines a relaxed, provincial pace with leafy plazas, riverside parks and a strong traditional culture.

Founded in 1821 as Villa de San Pedro del Durazno by General Fructuoso Rivera, the city keeps a compact historic core around Plaza Independencia. Its landmarks include the neoclassical San Pedro Church, the Museo Histórico Casa de Rivera and the Teatro Español, which together reflect Durazno's early role in Uruguayan history.

The Yí River shapes much of daily life here. El Sauzal beach, the Camping 33 Orientales and riverside parks offer outdoor recreation, while the Bioparque Washington Rodríguez gives families a chance to see regional wildlife. Just outside the centre, the Parque de la Hispanidad serves as a large green space and event venue.

Durazno is best known across Uruguay for its February Festival Nacional de Folclore, one of the country's most important folk music events, along with the Encuentro Gaucho and large open-air concerts. These gatherings give the city a lively seasonal calendar and a strong regional identity.

For travellers, Durazno is a convenient stop on Ruta 5 between Montevideo and the north, offering regional food, easy access to Santa Bernardina airport and a calm base for both leisure visits and business trips through central Uruguay.
