About Zaporizka
Zaporizhzhia is a major industrial and cultural city on the Dnieper River in southeastern Ukraine, serving as the administrative centre of Zaporizhzhia Oblast. The city stretches along both banks of the river and is best known for Khortytsia Island, the historic heartland of the Zaporozhian Cossacks.
Founded in 1770 as the Aleksandrovsk fortress, the settlement grew into a regional trading and manufacturing centre and was renamed Zaporizhzhia in 1921. The construction of the Dnipro Hydroelectric Station in the 1920s and 1930s turned the city into a major centre of steel, engineering and energy production, a role it retains today.
Khortytsia Island is the city's defining landmark, home to the Khortytsia National Reserve and the open-air Museum of Zaporizhian Cossacks, which recreates the Cossack capital known as the Zaporozhian Sich. Other points of interest include the monumental DniproHES dam, the long central avenue of Sobornyi Prospect, the Regional Museum and riverside parks such as Dubovyi Hai.
The city is divided by the Dnieper into several districts connected by bridges and long boulevards. Central neighbourhoods around Sobornyi Avenue concentrate shops, cafés and hotels, while riverside areas offer views of Khortytsia and the broad waterways. Local life mixes Soviet-era architecture, industrial heritage and a strong Cossack identity expressed through museums, festivals and traditional crafts.
Zaporizhzhia remains relevant for business travellers through its metallurgy, engineering, aviation engine and energy industries, as well as trade and logistics connections. For leisure visitors, the main draws are Cossack history, the Dnieper landscape and a relaxed, authentic Ukrainian urban experience away from the larger tourist centres.
