About Sumska

Sumy is a city in northeastern Ukraine, the administrative centre of Sumy Oblast, situated on the Psel River about 30 km from the Russian border. Founded in 1652 as a Cossack fortress, it retains a calm, green, river-town character while functioning as a regional education and industrial hub.

The city's centre is marked by Soborna Street and the historic Transfiguration Cathedral, an 18th-century landmark with a 56-metre bell tower. Nearby, the ornate wooden Altanka gazebo is a symbol of Sumy, and the Holy Resurrection Church, begun around 1702, is the city's oldest stone building. The Sumy Regional Art Museum and the Local Lore Museum document the area's heritage.

Sumy's layout follows the Psel and its tributaries, with central streets, riverside promenades and quiet residential micro-districts such as Khimmistechko and the 12th micro-district. Green parks, fountains and the riverside offer relaxed recreation, while Sumy State University and several technical institutes give the city a noticeable student presence.

As a regional business centre, Sumy hosts engineering, machine-building and chemical enterprises, along with conferences, exhibitions and a growing IT and education sector. Its location near the border makes it a transit point for regional trade and travel.

For visitors, Sumy offers a compact historic core, Cossack-era churches, local museums and easy day trips across Sumy Oblast, combined with practical transport links to Kharkiv, Poltava and Kyiv.
