About Kirovohradska
Kropyvnytskyi is the administrative centre of Kirovohrad Oblast in central Ukraine, set on the Inhul River. Founded in 1754 around the Fort of St. Elizabeth, the city was long known as Yelysavethrad and later Kirovohrad before being renamed in 2016 in honour of playwright Marko Kropyvnytskyi.
The city's historical centre combines 19th-century commercial and civic architecture with green spaces such as Kovalivskyi Park and the local arboretum. The surviving earth ramparts of the 18th-century fortress are among its most distinctive heritage sites, while the Regional Museum of Local Lore traces the area from early settlement to the present.
Kropyvnytskyi has a strong theatrical identity: the Theatre of Coryphaei, founded by Marko Kropyvnytskyi in 1882, was one of the first professional Ukrainian theatres and still anchors the city's cultural life. The central districts of Fortechnyi and Podilskyi offer a mix of historic streets, cafés, markets and everyday city life.
The economy is built around agricultural machinery, food processing and logistics serving the fertile farmlands of central Ukraine. Its position between Kyiv, Odesa and the Dnipro region makes the city a practical stop for business travel, conferences and regional trade.
For visitors, Kropyvnytskyi offers a low-key but genuine view of central Ukraine: manageable scale, historic landmarks, theatre and local food, with connections by rail and road to larger destinations.
