About Khmelnytska

Khmelnytskyi is the administrative centre of Khmelnytskyi Oblast in western Ukraine, built on both banks of the Southern Bug River. Its compact centre, pedestrianised Proskurivska Street and tree-lined embankment make the city easy to explore on foot.

The settlement was first recorded as Ploskiriv and later became Proskuriv before being renamed in 1954 in honour of Cossack leader Bohdan Khmelnytsky. Historic churches, restored facades and monuments reflect this layered past, while St. Andrew's Cathedral is among the city's most recognisable landmarks.

Visitors can walk along Proskurivska Street to reach cafés, shops and the Southern Bug embankment, then relax in Mykhailo Chekman Park or visit the Island of Love. The Eureka interactive science museum and local markets add family-friendly and everyday local experiences.

Khmelnytskyi is also a regional centre for machine building, food processing, light industry and education, anchored by Khmelnytskyi National University. Its railway junction and growing business community make it a practical stop for work as well as leisure.

For travellers, Khmelnytskyi offers a quieter, manageable alternative to Ukraine's larger cities, with enough history, green space and local food to fill a short stay, and good connections to the wider Podillia region.
