About Kharkivska

Kharkiv is Ukraine's second-largest city and the administrative centre of Kharkiv Oblast, set where the Kharkiv, Lopan and Udy rivers meet in eastern Ukraine. A historic university and industrial city, it mixes Cossack-era roots, early Soviet Constructivist architecture and a long scientific tradition with a city rebuilding amid war.

Founded in the mid-17th century as a fortified Cossack settlement, Kharkiv served as the capital of Soviet Ukraine from 1919 to 1934. Its landmarks include the vast Freedom Square, the Constructivist Derzhprom building, the Dormition and Annunciation cathedrals and the Shevchenko monument, while its universities, museums and historic streets reflect centuries of learning and trade.

Districts such as Shevchenkivskyi, Kyivskyi, Saltivskyi, Kholodnohirskyi and Osnovianskyi each have a distinct character. Central Shevchenkivskyi holds Freedom Square, Karazin Kharkiv National University and Central Park, while Sumska Street has long been a focus for cafés, shops, theatres and cultural life.

Kharkiv is a major centre of engineering, aerospace, IT and higher education, home to institutions such as the Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute, Karazin University and a network of research and technology firms. Historically it has hosted trade fairs, conferences and business events, giving it regional importance for industry and innovation.

Since the 2022 full-scale invasion, Kharkiv has experienced widespread damage and ongoing security constraints. Travel requires up-to-date advice and careful planning, yet the city remains culturally and historically significant, with recovery, humanitarian and business-related visits shaping present-day life.
