About Donetska

Donetsk is a large industrial city in eastern Ukraine and the administrative centre of Donetsk Oblast, at the heart of the coal-mining Donbas region. Founded in 1869 by Welsh industrialist John Hughes as the workers' settlement Yuzivka, the city grew into one of the former Russian Empire's leading steel and coal centres and was later renamed Stalino before taking the name Donetsk in 1961.

The city's character is shaped by heavy industry, wide Soviet-era boulevards and a mix of mining heritage and green space. Key landmarks include Donbass Arena, once the home of Shakhtar Donetsk football club, the Cathedral of the Transfiguration, the Park of Forged Figures, the Donetsk Botanical Garden, and theatres such as the Donetsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre.

Central districts such as Voroshylovskyi and Kyivskyi contain most administrative buildings, universities, hotels and cultural institutions, while older industrial neighbourhoods spread across the city's nine administrative raions. Artema Street forms a central axis lined with shops, cafés and public buildings.

Economically, Donetsk has long been associated with coal mining, metallurgy, chemicals and machine building, and it developed strong scientific and higher-education institutions. Since 2014, however, the city has been controlled by Russian-backed forces and was declared the capital of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic; in 2022 Russia announced its annexation, which is not recognised internationally.

Because of the ongoing war, most governments advise against all travel to Donetsk, and its international airport has been closed since 2014. Ordinary tourism and business travel are not currently possible, although the city remains significant for understanding the region's industrial history and the wider conflict.

Donetska Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

Late spring and early autumn have traditionally offered the mildest weather for exploring Donetsk's parks and central streets. Because of the ongoing conflict, however, most governments currently advise against travel to the city.

How to Get Around

Donetsk's public transport historically included buses, trolleybuses and trams connecting its districts, with taxis and private cars for greater flexibility. Movement today is affected by security conditions, checkpoints and restricted access to some areas.

Where to Stay

The central Voroshylovskyi and Kyivskyi districts have traditionally held most hotels and are convenient for the city's main landmarks, offices and cultural venues. Accommodation options are currently limited by the security situation, and availability should be checked carefully.

Food & Drink

Local cuisine mixes Ukrainian and Russian traditions, with dishes such as borscht, varenyky, salo and grilled meat common in cafés and restaurants. Markets and neighbourhood eateries have long been part of daily life, although the current situation limits dining options.
