About Chernivetska

Chernivtsi is the administrative centre of Chernivtsi Oblast in western Ukraine, set close to the Romanian border on the banks of the Prut River. Often called "Little Vienna," it is best known for its Habsburg-era architecture, relaxed café culture and the UNESCO-listed Residence of Bukovinian and Dalmatian Metropolitans, now the main campus of Chernivtsi National University.

The city's layered past under Moldavian, Austro-Hungarian, Romanian and Soviet rule has left a distinctive Central European character. Elegant Art Nouveau and Secessionist facades, cobbled streets, and landmarks such as the Theatre Square, City Hall and the Armenian Church, which now houses an organ hall, reflect this multicultural heritage.

Much of the centre is compact and walkable, centred on the pedestrian Olha Kobylyanska Street with its cafés, shops and historic buildings. Around it, visitors can explore the university quarter, Turkish Square, the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit and the university's botanical garden, while the open-air museum of folk architecture offers a glimpse of rural Bukovina.

As a regional centre, Chernivtsi combines university life, small-scale industry, trade and growing services with a lively cultural calendar. Local cafés and restaurants serve Bukovinian and Ukrainian dishes, and the city's markets and pedestrian streets create an easygoing atmosphere for both short stays and longer visits.

For leisure travellers, Chernivtsi offers a compact historic centre and access to the Carpathians and Bukovina region; for business visitors, it functions as a practical regional hub near the Romanian border, with connections by rail and road and a small international airport close to the city.
