About Soroti
Soroti is the main commercial and administrative centre of the Teso sub-region in eastern Uganda, set between flat plains and the western shores of Lake Kyoga. It is a growing regional hub where agricultural trade, public services and transport routes meet, giving the city a practical, working character rather than a tourist-heavy atmosphere.
The city is best known for Soroti Rock, a large granite outcrop that rises abruptly from the town and serves as a local landmark and viewpoint. Lake Kyoga lies a short distance to the west and supports fishing and lakeside activity, while Soroti University and Soroti Regional Referral Hospital underline the city's role in education and health for the surrounding region.
Around the centre, the main market, bus and taxi areas, and commercial streets cluster near the Soroti Road corridor. Visitors can climb Soroti Rock, explore the lakeshore, and see the citrus farms and rural villages of the Teso countryside that produce oranges, millet, sorghum and groundnuts.
Soroti's economy revolves around agriculture, processing, retail trade and regional administration. Business travel is common for government, NGO, health and education work, while leisure visitors often pass through on journeys between Kampala, Mbale and the northern districts.
For both leisure and business travellers, Soroti offers an authentic, unhurried view of eastern Uganda, with easy access to Lake Kyoga and the wider Teso region rather than the scale and crowds of the capital.

Soroti Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The drier months from December to February and June to August are generally the most comfortable for visiting Soroti, with easier road travel and better conditions for climbing Soroti Rock and exploring Lake Kyoga. The wet seasons, roughly March to May and September to November, bring lush countryside but can make some rural routes muddy.
How to Get Around
Within Soroti, boda boda motorcycle taxis and shared taxis are the most common ways to move between the town centre, markets and nearby areas. Walking is practical for short central trips, while private vehicles or hired cars are useful for reaching Lake Kyoga and outlying villages.
Where to Stay
Most accommodation is concentrated in central Soroti near Soroti Road and the main market, with a mix of small hotels, guesthouses and budget lodges. Staying in the centre gives convenient access to transport, restaurants and the Soroti Rock trail, while lakeside lodges suit travellers focused on Lake Kyoga.
Food & Drink
Soroti's food scene centres on local Teso cooking, including millet bread (atap), groundnut sauce, malakwang greens and fresh fish from Lake Kyoga. The town is also known for citrus, and small restaurants, cafés and roadside stalls serve everyday Ugandan and regional dishes.
