About Masindi

Masindi is a compact town in Uganda's Western Region and the capital of Masindi District, set on the Bunyoro plateau at about 1,227 metres. Known locally as a place of many paths, it serves as the main gateway between Kampala and Murchison Falls National Park, with most safari traffic passing through for fuel, supplies and an overnight stop.

The town has deep roots in the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom. During the nineteenth century it served for a period as a kingdom capital and cotton-trading centre, and explorers Samuel and Florence Baker stayed here in 1873. Colonial-era landmarks include the 1923 Masindi Hotel and the wartime Our Lady Queen of Poland Catholic Church at Nyabyeya, built by Polish refugees between 1943 and 1945.

Masindi's heritage is easy to explore on foot. A self-guided walking trail links the Kamurasi-Baker Monument, the old European cemetery and the town centre, while Booma Hill offers views over red-tiled roofs and the surrounding countryside. Masindi Hotel, often described as Uganda's oldest operating hotel, famously hosted Ernest Hemingway and the cast of The African Queen.

Beyond the town, Budongo Forest and Murchison Falls National Park anchor the area's tourism. Chimpanzee trekking at Kaniyo Pabidi, game drives, Nile boat trips and the Kichumbanyobo park gate lie within easy reach, while the central market offers produce, kitenge fabrics and local crafts.

Masindi matters to both leisure and business travellers: it is the practical base for safaris and forest excursions, and a regional hub for agriculture, trade and agro-processing. Road connections to Kampala, Hoima and the oil-producing Albertine region reinforce its role as a working stopover and service town.

Masindi Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry seasons from December to February and June to September are the best months, when game viewing in Murchison Falls National Park is easiest and roads into Budongo Forest are more reliable. Rainy months can still be rewarding but make some park tracks muddy.

How to Get Around

Masindi town is small enough to walk, with boda boda motorcycle taxis and shared taxis for longer hops. Coaches such as Link Bus run from Kampala in about three to four hours, but a private vehicle or 4x4 is needed for Murchison Falls and the Budongo Forest tracks.

Where to Stay

Masindi Hotel, opened in 1923, is the town's best-known heritage option, while mid-range hotels and guesthouses line the main road and suit early-morning park entry. Lodges inside or near Murchison Falls National Park offer closer access for safari-focused stays.

Food & Drink

Local eateries serve Bunyoro staples such as millet bread, groundnut sauce, matooke, beans and fresh fish, with the central market supplying produce and street snacks. Masindi Hotel and town restaurants offer a wider menu of Ugandan and simple international dishes.
