About Kisoro

Kisoro is a small highland town in far southwestern Uganda, set among terraced hills below the Virunga volcanoes. Its cool climate, busy market and mountain views make it a relaxed gateway to some of East Africa's most dramatic protected areas.

The town sits in the Kigezi sub-region close to the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The surrounding landscape is defined by steep cultivated slopes, volcanic peaks and crater lakes, including Lake Mutanda, a short drive from town.

Kisoro is best known as the main access point for Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and the southern sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, where mountain gorilla trekking and guided forest walks attract visitors from around the world. Local trails also lead to the summits of Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga and Mount Sabyinyo.

Travellers use the town as a practical base for permits, supplies, guides and accommodation, while its airstrip offers scheduled charter connections to Entebbe and other safari destinations. Kisoro also serves business and cross-border movement between Uganda, Rwanda and the DRC.
