About Arua

Arua is a city and commercial hub in Uganda's West Nile sub-region of the Northern Region, close to the borders with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan. Its position at the meeting point of regional trade routes has made it a busy centre for cross-border commerce, logistics and NGO operations. The city's history runs from the colonial era, when it became an administrative centre after West Nile passed from the Congo Free State and Anglo-Egyptian Sudan to the Uganda Protectorate, to its elevation to city status in 2020. The name Arua is linked to the Lugbara word for prison, and the area is remembered as the birthplace of former president Idi Amin. Local landmarks include Arua Hill and Awindiri Hill, the Ajai Wildlife Reserve about 10 km south and Rhino Camp on the Albert Nile roughly 62 km east. In town, Ediofe Cathedral, the busy Arua Park market, Muni University and the West Nile Golf Club reflect everyday life and local character. Arua supports small industries such as maize milling, joinery, tobacco processing and wineries, while its airfield and improved roads to Gulu and Kampala underpin trade. For travellers, the city offers a gateway to the Albert Nile, nearby wildlife areas and West Nile's cultural heritage, together with practical services for business visits.
