About Ashgabat
Ashgabat is the capital and largest city of Turkmenistan, set between the Karakum Desert and the Kopetdag mountain range in southern Central Asia. The city is best known for its vast ensembles of white marble-clad government buildings, gilded monuments, fountains and wide ceremonial boulevards, a look that has earned it a place in Guinness World Records for the highest concentration of white marble buildings.
Founded in 1881 as a Russian garrison town near an older Silk Road settlement, Ashgabat grew around the Trans-Caspian Railway before being devastated by the 1948 earthquake. Much of today's monumental centre is a post-independence creation, rebuilt as a showcase of Turkmen national identity and state architecture.
Key sights include the Independence Monument, the Arch of Neutrality, the Alem Cultural and Entertainment Center with its enclosed Ferris wheel, the National Museum of Turkmenistan and the Turkmen Carpet Museum. Outside the centre, the ancient Parthian site of Nisa, the Türkmenbaşy Ruhy Mosque and the underground lake at Kow Ata are among the most visited excursions.
Districts such as Berkararlyk and Archabil hold government buildings, parks and modern hotels, while bazaars like the Gulistan Bazaar offer a contrast to the polished marble core. The city's energy economy and government institutions also make it a focal point for business travel and international events.
Visitors are drawn by Ashgabat's unusual architecture and desert setting, while business travellers find its conference facilities, ministries and energy-sector links concentrated in one compact capital.
