About Tozeur
Tozeur is an oasis city in southwestern Tunisia, set on the northern edge of the Sahara between the Chott el Djerid and Chott el Gharsa salt lakes. The city is the capital of Tozeur Governorate and is best known for its enormous palm grove, hundreds of thousands of date palms, and a distinctive architectural style built from yellow and brown bricks arranged in geometric patterns.
The old medina of Ouled El Hadef is the historic heart of Tozeur, with narrow lanes, rounded arches and finely patterned brick facades that give the quarter its desert character. Nearby, the Dar Cherait Museum presents Saharan life, crafts and local heritage in a recreated palace, while the Belvedere Rocks offer views over the palm groves.
Tozeur is the natural base for exploring the surrounding desert and oasis landscapes. Visitors travel out to the vast Chott el Djerid salt lake, the mountain oases of Chebika, Tamerza and Mides, and the Star Wars filming sites near Ong Jemel and Mos Espa, where cinematic desert scenery remains a major draw.
Dates and tourism drive the local economy, and the city's hotels, resorts and conference facilities make it relevant for both leisure travellers and business events. Its food scene centres on dates, couscous and desert-region dishes, while its international airport and road links connect the city to Tunis and, seasonally, to European destinations.
For many visitors, Tozeur is Tunisia's gateway to the Sahara, combining an authentic oasis medina with dramatic salt flats, palm gardens, film history and easy access to the desert.
