About Gafsa
Gafsa is the capital of Gafsa Governorate in southwestern Tunisia, set between the Atlas Mountains and the edge of the Sahara. As an oasis city with a long history, it combines desert surroundings, palm groves and thermal springs with a strong role in Tunisia's phosphate industry.
The city traces its roots to the ancient town of Capsa, which gave its name to the Mesolithic Capsian culture. Roman-era pools known as the Termil, fed by warm springs, remain a focal point of the old medina alongside the Kasbah and the Great Mosque.
Beyond the central landmarks, Gafsa's medina offers narrow streets, traditional shops and a quieter local atmosphere. The surrounding oasis and nearby sites such as Metlaoui and the Chott region make it a practical base for exploring Tunisia's semi-desert southwest.
Gafsa is also an industrial and administrative centre, with phosphate mining shaping the regional economy since the late 19th century. Its markets, cafés and restaurants reflect southern Tunisian food culture, with dates, olives, pistachios, couscous and grilled lamb among local staples.
For visitors, Gafsa works well for both cultural travel and business linked to the phosphate and mining sectors. Its small size keeps distances manageable, while its position opens routes toward Tozeur, the mountain oases and the desert interior.
