About Gabès

Gabès is a coastal city in southeastern Tunisia and the capital of Gabès Governorate, lying on the Gulf of Gabès between the Mediterranean shore and the edge of the Sahara. It is best known for its rare seaside oasis, where a dense palm grove runs down to the coast and gives the city a distinctive green setting among the drier landscapes of southern Tunisia.

The city has deep historical roots, growing from the Roman settlement of Tacape into an important stop on trans-Saharan and Mediterranean trade routes. Its old quarters, traditional souks and the market of Jara preserve that layered past, while the nearby Mareth Line and its military museum recall the region's role in the Second World War.

Visitors usually explore the oasis gardens, the souks and medina, the beach and the port area, then use Gabès as a base for excursions to the troglodyte houses of Matmata, Star Wars filming locations and the dunes around Douz. The University of Gabès and the city's port, chemical and phosphate industries also give it a working, business-oriented character.

Modern Gabès is an important industrial and transport hub for southern Tunisia, with a busy port and rail connection toward the capital. This industrial role has brought economic activity as well as environmental challenges, while the city remains a practical gateway for travellers heading into the desert.

For both leisure and business visitors, Gabès combines a compact, authentic southern Tunisian atmosphere with access to oasis landscapes, desert routes and regional industry, making it a useful and distinctive stop between the coast and the Sahara.

Gabès Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for exploring Gabès, with warm days, cooler nights and low rainfall. Summer can be extremely hot, while winter is mild and generally quiet.

How to Get Around

Gabès is compact enough to walk in the central medina and souk areas, and local buses and taxis cover the wider city. For excursions to Matmata, Douz or the desert, a rental car or private driver is more practical.

Where to Stay

Most accommodation is found in the city centre and near the coast, with a limited but functional range of hotels and guesthouses. Staying centrally keeps the souks, oasis and beach within easy reach.

Food & Drink

Gabès offers fresh seafood from the Gulf of Gabès, classic Tunisian dishes such as couscous and brik, and dates from the local oasis. Traditional cafés and small restaurants around the souk are good places to try mint tea, harissa-based dishes and regional specialities.
