About Kara

Kara is northern Togo's largest city and the capital of Kara Region, set around 413 km north of Lomé at the foot of the Kabyè mountains. It grew from a small market town into Togo's second city, shaped by the Kabyè people and the region's role in modern Togolese history.

The city is the gateway to the Kabyè highlands and the UNESCO-listed Koutammakou landscape, where the Tamberma people build distinctive two-storey takienta tower houses. Nearby Sarakawa wildlife park shelters antelopes, zebras and crocodiles, while the Kara Regional Museum presents the area's ancestral heritage and traditions.

Around the centre, neighbourhoods such as Téloudè, Tomdè and Ewowou mix markets, shops, restaurants and guesthouses. Every July, the Evala wrestling festival turns Kara into the focus of Kabyè initiation rites, drawing visitors to the region's most celebrated cultural event.

Kara also serves as a regional hub for commerce, administration and education, anchored by the University of Kara. Its road links, local markets and Niamtougou International Airport make it a practical base for exploring northern Togo.

For travellers, Kara offers a compact urban base with strong cultural and natural attractions within reach, making it relevant for both cultural tourism and regional business trips.

Kara Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from November to March offers the most reliable conditions for exploring Kara and the surrounding countryside, with warm days and lower rain. July is a distinctive time to visit for the Evala wrestling festival, the Kabyè people's traditional initiation rite.

How to Get Around

Within Kara, shared taxis and motorcycle taxis (zemidjan) are common for short trips, while the compact centre is walkable. For visits to Koutammakou, Sarakawa or Kéran National Park, a rented car or private driver is more practical.

Where to Stay

Most accommodation clusters around the city centre near the main roundabout and along Kara's principal roads, with hotels, guesthouses and smaller lodges. Staying centrally gives easy access to restaurants, markets and departure points for excursions.

Food & Drink

Kara's food scene centres on Togolese staples such as pâte, fufu, grilled meat and sauces, alongside market snacks and street food. Local millet beer (tchoukoutou) and cafés add to the dining options, especially around the centre.
