About Surin
Surin is the capital of Surin Province in northeastern Thailand's Isan region, best known as the country's elephant heartland and for its strong Khmer cultural heritage. The compact provincial capital has a relaxed, everyday atmosphere centred on markets, the railway and bus stations, and streets lined with shrines, silk shops and local food stalls.
The city's identity is shaped by centuries of Khmer influence and the elephants of surrounding villages. The Surin Elephant Round-up, held each November at Sri Narong Stadium, draws large crowds for parades, traditional elephant performances and ceremonies that reflect the province's long elephant-keeping tradition.
Beyond the city, Prasat Sikhoraphum is a well-preserved 12th-century Khmer temple with five brick towers, while the Ta Muean group of ruins near the Cambodian border and the elephant community at Ban Ta Klang offer deeper cultural excursions. Phanom Sawai Forest Park and the golden dragon gate near the City Pillar Shrine provide green space and viewpoints close to town.
Surin is also a centre for silk weaving, jasmine rice farming and traditional crafts. The city centre holds lively morning and evening markets, while villages such as Ban Tha Sawang are known for handwoven silk produced on traditional looms.
For travellers, Surin works as a gateway to the Khmer temple trail of lower Isan and the border region with Cambodia. Its festival calendar, authentic Isan and Khmer-influenced food, and quieter pace make it a rewarding stop for both leisure visitors and business travellers moving through the northeast.

Surin Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit

Most hotels and guesthouses cluster near the city centre, around the bus and railway stations, making them convenient for markets and restaurants. For a more local experience, homestays and small lodges are available near silk-weaving villages and the elephant communities around Tha Tum.
