About Samut Prakan
Samut Prakan sits on the Chao Phraya River where it meets the Gulf of Thailand, roughly 25 kilometres southeast of central Bangkok. Historically known as Pak Nam, the city is both the capital of Samut Prakan Province and a working gateway between Bangkok's urban sprawl, riverside communities and the coast.
The riverside Phra Samut Chedi, built in 1827–28 and nicknamed Phra Chedi Klang Nam, is the province's symbol and the focal point of its annual temple fair. Nearby Wat Asokaram, the Ancient City (Mueang Boran) and the three-headed elephant of the Erawan Museum show the area's mix of Buddhist heritage, architectural replicas and collector-driven art.
Beyond the centre, Phra Pradaeng contains Bang Krachao, a low-rise green peninsula known as Bangkok's green lung, with cycle paths, gardens and the Bang Nam Phueng weekend floating market. Bang Pu seaside resort attracts birdwatchers and sunset crowds, while the Samut Prakan Crocodile Farm remains a long-standing family attraction.
The province is also a major industrial and logistics corridor, home to Bang Pu industrial estates, factories and warehousing, with Suvarnabhumi Airport just a short drive away in Bang Phli. Seafood, riverside restaurants and local markets reflect its working coastal identity.
For travellers, Samut Prakan works as both a convenient base near the airport and a day-trip destination from Bangkok, offering temples, open-air museums, green escapes and coastal scenery without the intensity of the capital.

Samut Prakan Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The cool, dry season from November to February is the most comfortable for exploring outdoor attractions such as the Ancient City, Bang Krachao and Bang Pu. Avoid the heaviest rain between May and October, and note that winter brings large flocks of gulls to Bang Pu.
How to Get Around
The BTS Skytrain Sukhumvit line reaches Samut Prakan at stations such as Pak Nam and Kheha, connecting the area to central Bangkok. Songthaews, taxis, motorbike taxis, rental cars and private drivers cover the rest, with ferries useful for reaching Bang Krachao.
Where to Stay
Stay near Pak Nam for riverside views and easy BTS access, or around Bang Phli and Suvarnabhumi Airport for early flights and business travel. Phra Pradaeng and Bang Krachao offer quiet homestays and eco-lodges, while the eastern industrial corridor suits corporate and airport stays.
Food & Drink
Samut Prakan is known for fresh seafood along the Chao Phraya and at Bang Pu, plus riverside restaurants and weekend markets such as Bang Nam Phueng. Local dishes include fried sea bass, dried shrimp, fermented fish and Thai desserts, alongside casual cafés and street food.
