About Rayong
Rayong is a coastal city and provincial capital on Thailand's eastern Gulf of Thailand coast, about 180 kilometres southeast of Bangkok. Long known as a fishing and trading town, it now combines a relaxed seaside character with one of the country's most important industrial corridors.
The city's history is closely linked to King Taksin, who gathered support in the area before establishing Thonburi as Siam's capital in the late 18th century. Landmarks such as the King Taksin the Great Shrine and the waterfront Phra Chedi Klang Nam, a pagoda standing in the water, reflect this heritage.
Popular destinations around the city include Mae Ramphueng and Suan Son beaches, the Laem Mae Phim coastline and the nearby island of Koh Samet, reached by ferry from Ban Phe. Khao Laem Ya–Mu Ko Samet National Park protects coastal forest, viewpoints and marine areas.
Rayong is also a major centre for seafood, fish sauce and tropical fruit, with durian, rambutan and mangosteen grown across the province. The Map Ta Phut industrial estate and the Eastern Economic Corridor have made the area a hub for petrochemicals, energy and automotive manufacturing, while night markets and seafood restaurants anchor daily life.
For travellers, Rayong offers an accessible mix of beach getaways, local food and practical access to industrial and business sites, making it relevant for both holidays and work-related visits.
