About Buri Ram
Buriram is the capital of Buriram Province in Thailand's lower northeast (Isaan) and a compact city whose name translates as "city of happiness." Once known mainly for agriculture, it has grown into a distinctive destination for Khmer heritage, motorsport and football.
The region's history is closely tied to the Khmer Empire. Phanom Rung Historical Park, an 11th–13th-century sanctuary built on an extinct volcano about 60 km south of the city, is one of Thailand's finest Khmer monuments, while Prasat Muang Tam lies nearby. In the city, Khao Kradong Forest Park offers a volcanic crater lake and a large seated Buddha overlooking the plain.
Buriram's modern fame comes from its sports zone, nicknamed Thunder Castle. Chang Arena is the home of Buriram United football club, and the adjacent Chang International Circuit hosts the MotoGP Thailand Grand Prix and other international races. The area also includes the castle-themed Buriram Castle complex, hotels and event facilities.
In the compact city centre, visitors can explore the King Rama I Monument, the city pillar shrine, local markets and the weekend Sao Kraw walking street. Evening food stalls serve classic Isaan dishes, while cafés and restaurants range from simple local kitchens to modern outlets near the sports district.
For leisure travellers, Buriram pairs ancient Khmer sites with sports tourism and regional food; for business and event visitors, it offers a growing conference, hospitality and transport infrastructure. Buriram Airport and rail connections link the city with Bangkok and the wider northeast, making it an increasingly practical base in Isaan.

Buri Ram Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The cool, dry season from November to February is the most comfortable time for sightseeing and temple visits. March to May is hot, while the rainy season from roughly June to October is quieter; MotoGP race weekends draw large crowds and early booking is wise.
How to Get Around
Buriram has no metro or fixed city bus network, so visitors rely on songthaews, tuk-tuks, motorcycle taxis and rental cars or motorbikes. A private car, chauffeur or pre-booked transfer is practical for out-of-town sights such as Phanom Rung and the Chang International Circuit.
Where to Stay
The city centre near the railway station suits travellers wanting markets, cafés and local dining, while the area around Chang Arena and Chang International Circuit is convenient for sports events. Options range from budget guesthouses to larger hotels, many offering transfers.
Food & Drink
Buriram serves classic Isaan flavours such as grilled chicken (kai yang), papaya salad (som tam), sticky rice and larb. The weekend Sao Kraw walking street and local night markets are great for street food, while restaurants and cafés offer more varied dining.
