About Pwani
Pwani Region, whose Swahili name means "coast," is Tanzania's coastal administrative region wrapping around Dar es Salaam. Its capital is Kibaha, and the region stretches from the historic town of Bagamoyo in the north to the Rufiji River delta and Mafia Island in the south.
Bagamoyo anchors the region's history as a former terminus of the East African caravan trade and the first capital of German East Africa. Visitors can explore the Kaole Ruins, the Caravan Serai museum, old churches and a shoreline that once witnessed the ivory and slave trades.
Beyond Bagamoyo, the region offers Mafia Island and its marine park, known for whale sharks, coral reefs and diving, as well as Saadani National Park, where coastal beach meets bush and wildlife. The Rufiji delta supports fishing communities and mangrove forests.
Kibaha serves as an administrative and commercial hub, while the region's position next to Dar es Salaam connects it to Tanzania's largest port, airport and business networks. Agriculture, fishing and tourism drive much of the local economy.
For leisure travellers, Pwani offers Swahili history, beaches and wildlife without travelling far inland. For business visitors, its proximity to Dar es Salaam and Kibaha's institutions make it a practical base for meetings, trade and regional travel.
