About Arusha

Arusha is northern Tanzania's main urban hub and the gateway to the country's famous northern safari circuit. Set on the southern slopes of Mount Meru at about 1,400 metres above sea level, the city has a mild highland climate and a relaxed, cosmopolitan character shaped by its role as a regional base for tourism, diplomacy and trade.

The city centre is anchored by the Clock Tower, a small roundabout often described as the midpoint between Cape Town and Cairo. Nearby, the Arusha Declaration Museum recalls Tanzania's political history, while the Cultural Heritage Centre showcases East African art and craft. Mount Meru and Arusha National Park, with its giraffes, colobus monkeys and Ngurdoto Crater, sit close to the city.

Arusha is also an important diplomatic and business centre. It hosts the East African Community headquarters and the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights, and it was home to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. This international presence supports a busy calendar of conferences and gives the city a multilingual, outward-looking atmosphere.

Neighbourhoods such as the central business district, Sekei, Njiro and Olasiti offer a mix of hotels, restaurants, markets and quieter residential areas. Local food ranges from grilled meat (nyama choma) and Swahili dishes to coffee grown on nearby slopes, with lively markets and cafés spread across town.

For travellers, Arusha works as a practical base before and after safaris to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara, as well as a destination in its own right for climbing Mount Meru and exploring the local coffee and craft scene.

Arusha Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from June to October is the most popular time for safaris and climbing Mount Meru, with clear skies and good wildlife viewing. The long rains fall roughly from March to May, while the short rains arrive around November and December; Arusha's elevation keeps daytime temperatures mild for much of the year.

How to Get Around

Arusha is compact enough to explore central areas on foot, while shared minibuses called daladalas, taxis and motorcycle taxis cover most parts of the city. For airport trips, safari departures or flexible sightseeing, many visitors use pre-arranged private drivers or rental cars.

Where to Stay

The city centre around the Clock Tower is convenient for restaurants, shops and business travel, while areas such as Sekei, Njiro and Themi offer quieter hotels and guesthouses. Lodges and tented camps on the outskirts suit safari itineraries and those heading toward Arusha National Park or Mount Meru.

Food & Drink

Arusha's food scene mixes Swahili dishes, grilled nyama choma, Indian-influenced cooking and international cafés. Central markets and street vendors serve local snacks, and several coffee shops showcase beans grown on nearby highland farms.
