About Kinmen
Kinmen is a small island county of Taiwan located just a few kilometres off the coast of Fujian in southeastern China. Known for its quiet rural landscapes, traditional Fujianese architecture and layered military heritage, it offers a slower and more historical contrast to Taiwan's major cities.
Kinmen's identity is shaped by its position on the Cold War front line. Decades of fortification left bunkers, tunnels and monuments such as the Zhaishan Tunnels, Juguang Tower, the Guningtou Battle Museum and the Beishan Broadcasting Wall, while sections of coastline and former military sites now form Kinmen National Park.
Jincheng, the county seat, is the main base for visitors, with its old streets, temples and restaurants. Nearby Shuitou Village preserves red-brick Minnan houses and grand overseas-Chinese villas, while smaller townships and the island of Lieyu, or Little Kinmen, add coastal scenery, wetlands and scattered wind lion god statues.
Local specialties reflect both Fujianese roots and military history: Kinmen kaoliang liquor, peanut candy known as gongtang, oyster dishes, and knives forged from spent artillery shells. The island is also popular for cycling, beaches, birdwatching and a slower pace of travel.
Kinmen is relevant for leisure travellers seeking history and island atmosphere, and for business or regional travel through Kinmen Airport, with its air links to Taiwan's main island and its historical cross-strait connections.
