About Homs

Homs is Syria's third-largest city and the capital of Homs Governorate, a historic crossroads on the Orontes River where routes from Damascus, Aleppo, the Mediterranean coast and the Syrian desert meet. Known in antiquity as Emesa, the city has served as an agricultural market, trade centre and transport hub for roughly two thousand years, giving it a layered identity that blends Roman, Islamic and Ottoman heritage.

History remains visible across the city. The Khalid ibn al-Walid Mosque, built in Ottoman-Turkish style in the early 1900s, houses the tomb of the seventh-century Arab commander Khalid ibn al-Walid, while the Um al-Zennar Church, also called the Church of the Virgin's Girdle, recalls Homs' early Christian presence. The citadel mound and the Great Mosque of al-Nuri mark the old core, and the roofed souks that extend south and east of the mosque still shelter workshops and small traders.

Neighbourhoods in the Old City, such as Bab Tadmur, Bab al-Dreib and Bab Hud, cluster tightly around the citadel, while Quwatli Street and surrounding central districts form the modern commercial spine. Beyond the city, Krak des Chevaliers, a UNESCO-listed Crusader castle, stands about 60 kilometres to the west, and the ruins of Palmyra lie to the east across the desert, making Homs a practical base for wider exploration.

Economically, Homs is a transportation and energy crossroads: major roads and rail lines pass through, and oil and gas pipelines connect the interior with coastal terminals. The surrounding countryside is known for grapes and arak production, and local food traditions include qatayef, maghtoota and Levantine mezze. Football clubs Al-Karamah and Al-Wathba and Khaled Ibn Al Walid Stadium give the city a strong sporting culture.

After years of wartime destruction, Homs is gradually rebuilding, and visitors find a city that rewards attention to its Old City, markets, religious monuments and strategic position between coast, capital and desert. For both leisure and business travellers, Homs offers a gateway to central Syria's history and a working view of one of the country's key regional centres.
