About Gävleborg
Gävle is a coastal city in east-central Sweden and the capital of Gävleborg County, set where the Gavleån river meets the Gulf of Bothnia about 180 kilometres north of Stockholm. With a compact centre, green avenues and an active port, it combines its role as a regional hub with a relaxed small-city atmosphere.
The city grew as a trading port and received its town charter in 1446. After a major fire in 1869, much of central Gävle was rebuilt with wide esplanades and a regular grid, while the preserved old quarter of Gamla Gefle keeps its 18th-century wooden houses. Landmarks include the neoclassical Gävle Castle, the county residence, and the Swedish Railway Museum, one of the country's most important transport collections.
Gävle's best-known symbol is the Gävle goat, a giant straw Yule goat erected on Slottorget each Advent and famous for its often dramatic fate. Nearby attractions include the Swedish Prison Museum, the Länsmuseet Gävleborg and Furuvik Park, an amusement park and zoo south of the city, while Boulognerskogen offers riverside walks and parkland in the centre.
The modern city is a centre for paper and pulp, logistics and coffee production, and is home to the University of Gävle. The port remains an important Baltic hub, and business travellers mix with students and visitors in the cafés and restaurants around the river, Stortorget and the central shopping streets.
For leisure travellers, Gävle offers museums, historic streets, coastal nature and seasonal events such as the Christmas goat, while its rail connections put Stockholm, Uppsala and the wider Gästrikland region within easy reach. Business visitors value the city's industries, university and compact, walkable centre.
