About Coronie

Coronie is a narrow coastal district in northern Suriname, known for its long Atlantic shoreline, coconut plantations, fishing villages and unhurried rural character. Its administrative centre is Totness, a small town stretched along the main East-West Link road between Paramaribo and Nickerie.

The district's past is rooted in Dutch colonial plantation agriculture, first in cotton and later in coconuts. Remnants of that history remain visible in older wooden buildings in Totness, the restored sea wall and the coconut groves that still line the coastal road. Coronie is one of Suriname's least populated districts, which gives it a calm, low-key atmosphere.

Nature is the main attraction. The Bigi Pan Special Management Area protects a large wetland and lagoon system where scarlet ibis, herons and other birdlife gather. The sea wall offers open coastal views, while mangrove forests, rice fields and the Coppename River at the eastern edge of the district add to the landscape.

For travellers, Coronie is more about slowing down than packed sightseeing. Small guesthouses and eco-lodges, especially around Bigi Pan, serve birdwatchers and day-trippers from Paramaribo. The district also lies along a corridor relevant to Suriname's developing offshore oil and gas sector.

Leisure and business visitors alike use Coronie as a stopover on the road between Paramaribo and Nickerie, combining coastal scenery, wildlife and a glimpse of everyday life in one of Suriname's least urbanised districts.

Coronie Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry seasons, roughly February to April and August to November, are the most comfortable times to visit Coronie. Roads are easier to travel in dry weather, and the coastal areas and Bigi Pan are best enjoyed outside the heavy rains.

How to Get Around

Coronie is small and rural, so most visitors arrive by car, taxi or minibus along the East-West Link road between Paramaribo and Nickerie. Renting a car gives flexibility to reach Totness, the sea wall and Bigi Pan, while local taxis and guesthouse transfers handle shorter trips.

Where to Stay

Accommodation is limited and mostly concentrated in Totness and near Bigi Pan, where simple guesthouses and eco-lodges cater to birdwatchers and overnight travellers. Some visitors also base themselves in Paramaribo or Nickerie and explore Coronie as a day trip.

Food & Drink

Local eating is simple and coastal: fresh fish, rice, coconut-based dishes and cassava bread reflect Coronie's plantation and fishing heritage. Coconut water and small local eateries in Totness are the everyday options, with dining choices concentrated around the main road.
