About Mudug

Galkayo, also spelled Gaalkacyo, is the capital of Mudug region in north-central Somalia and one of the country's largest inland cities. It sits roughly halfway between Mogadishu and Bosaso on a major corridor linking northern and southern Somalia, which makes it an important trading and transit centre. The urban area is divided between the Puntland administration in the north and the Galmudug administration in the south, with a visible dividing line running through the city.

The town grew under Italian colonial rule as Rocca Littorio and later became an administrative and commercial centre for central Somalia. After the collapse of the national government in the early 1990s, clan conflict split Galkayo along its north-south line, and that division still shapes local administration, security and daily life. Despite this, the city has remained a resilient hub of trade and movement.

Galkayo is best known for its busy livestock and camel markets, remittance and trading businesses, and a distinctive tradition of calligraphic art with workshops that train local visual artists. Its compact centre contains colonial-era buildings, mosques, markets, shops and tea houses rather than large-scale tourist attractions, giving the city a working, commercial character.

Northern districts such as Israac, Horumar and Garsoor and the southern district of Wadajir each have their own administrative identity. Hotels, guest houses, banks, universities and NGO offices are concentrated along the main roads, reflecting the city's role in education, aid work and business across central Somalia.

Galkayo matters most to business, diaspora, humanitarian and overland travellers because of its livestock economy, trade links and strategic position. Leisure tourism is limited, and security conditions can change quickly, so independent visitors should use local contacts and plan movements carefully.

Mudug Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

November to February is generally the most practical period, with drier conditions and less intense heat than the summer months. The Gu rains from April to June can make roads muddy, while the hottest months make overland travel more demanding.

How to Get Around

Galkayo is best navigated by taxi, auto-rickshaw or a private vehicle with a local driver, since there is no formal city bus network. Journeys beyond town are usually made by shared minibus or four-wheel-drive vehicle, often with attention to security conditions.

Where to Stay

Most accommodation is found in the northern districts of Israac, Horumar and Garsoor and the southern district of Wadajir. Options range from simple guest houses to mid-range hotels used by business travellers, NGOs and visiting families; confirm arrangements through local contacts.

Food & Drink

Local meals centre on rice or spaghetti served with goat, camel or chicken, alongside canjeero flatbread, sambuusa and spiced tea known as shaah. Camel milk is common, and restaurants and tea shops around the markets serve fresh grilled meat and breakfast dishes.
