About Galguduud
Dhusamareb (also spelled Dhusamareb or Dusmareb) is the capital of Galmudug state and the Galgaduud region in central Somalia. It is a compact administrative and commercial centre set in semi-arid grazing country, roughly 511 km from Mogadishu. Once known as Daar Dheer, the town has grown from a pastoral settlement into a hub for regional government, livestock trade and services.
Central Somalia's pastoral economy shapes daily life in Dhusamareb. Camels, goats and cattle are traded through local markets, and many residents have ties to herding communities across Galgaduud. Recent years have brought road improvements, municipal buildings and a regional hospital, while neighbourhoods such as Dayah, Hodan, Horseed, Waberi and Waharadde reflect gradual urban expansion.
As a state capital, Dhusamareb hosts government offices, meetings and public institutions, and serves as a base for organisations working in the region. The town has few conventional tourist attractions; its significance lies in its role as a practical centre for administration, trade and travel in central Somalia.
Travel to Dhusamareb requires careful planning. Security conditions vary, roads can become difficult in the rainy seasons, and independent travel is uncommon, so visitors generally arrange local contacts, security support and suitable vehicles in advance. With the right preparation, the town offers a clear view of everyday life and resilience in central Somalia.

Galguduud Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The cooler, drier months from about November to February are generally the most practical for visiting Dhusamareb, with lower temperatures and better road conditions. The long rains usually fall from April to June and can make unpaved routes difficult, so planning around the dry season is wise.
How to Get Around
Within the town, short trips are commonly made by taxi or rented four-wheel-drive vehicle. For travel to nearby districts, shared minibuses and 4x4s connect settlements, but road conditions and security make local advice and a reliable driver important.
Where to Stay
Accommodation is modest, with guesthouses and small hotels concentrated near the centre, the market and government areas. Visitors should confirm security, water and electricity arrangements before booking, and choose a location that keeps airport and office access practical.
Food & Drink
Meals centre on Somali staples such as rice, pasta, camel and goat meat, flatbreads and spiced tea. Local restaurants and teashops serve grilled meat and fresh bread, while markets offer dates, fruit and everyday supplies.
