About Žužemberk
Žužemberk is a small historic town in southeastern Slovenia, set in the upper Krka valley in the region known as Suha krajina. Its defining sight is Žužemberk Castle, a medieval fortress rising above a bend of the emerald Krka River and one of the best-known castle silhouettes in Lower Carniola.
The town grew around the castle, which developed from the 13th century onward and became the birthplace of the noble Auersperg family, including military commander Andrej Auersperg. Along the river stand the 13th-century St. Nicholas' Church with medieval frescoes and a cast-iron fountain with snake-head spouts, while the Krka's tufa waterfalls and canyon form a compact natural highlight at the edge of town.
Just outside the centre, Dvor pri Žužemberku preserves the restored Auersperg iron foundry complex, once the most important foundry in the Slovenian lands of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Today it hosts a Natura 2000 interpretive centre covering the Krka ecosystem and the region's iron-making heritage.
Žužemberk is small and walkable, with local cafés, the Park of Famous People from Suha krajina and riverside trails. The town also has an unexpected link to early Hollywood: Žužemberk-born Rozalija Sršen found fame in American silent films as Zalla Zarana, and a plaque marks her childhood home.
As a member of the Association of Historical Towns of Slovenia, Žužemberk works well as a quiet day-trip destination from Ljubljana or Novo Mesto. It suits travellers interested in castles, river landscapes and off-the-beaten-track heritage, while its Krka valley setting offers a relaxed base for exploring Lower Carniola.
