About Zreče
Zreče is a small town in northeastern Slovenia, set at the foot of the Pohorje mountains in the upper Dravinja Valley. It is best known as a wellness and outdoor destination, combining the Terme Zreče thermal spa with the nearby Rogla ski and hiking centre.
First documented in 1206, the settlement developed around farming, fruit growing and wood processing, and was historically linked to the Žiče Carthusian monks and the lords of Slovenske Konjice. The present town was formed in 1980 from the villages of Zgornje Zreče, Spodnje Zreče and Dobrava, and received town status in 2020.
Rogla, about 1,517 metres above sea level, offers skiing in winter and hiking, mountain biking and the Pohorje Treetop Walkway in summer. Other local sights include the Lovrenc Lakes high bog, artificial Zreče Lake, the pilgrim church of Our Lady at Brinjeva Gora, the highland village of Skomarje and the preserved Ošlak blacksmith forge.
The compact centre, Terme Zreče hotels and surrounding hamlets give the town a relaxed, small-scale character. Unior, one of Slovenia's best-known industrial and tourism groups, has its headquarters here, while the Zreče FEST and other seasonal events add life in summer.
For visitors, Zreče is equally suited to active mountain holidays, spa and wellness breaks, and smaller business meetings or conferences, with Maribor, Celje and the Žiče Charterhouse within easy reach.
