About Eastern
Kenema is the capital of Sierra Leone's Eastern Province and the country's third-largest city, after Freetown and Bo. It developed as a railway, timber and diamond-trading town and remains an important commercial hub for the region's diamond, cocoa, coffee and rice economy.
The city sits in a valley near the Kambui Hills, which form a green backdrop and a nearby forest reserve. Its central landmarks include the Kenema Clock Tower, the busy Kenema Market and the town museum, while the surrounding landscape gives access to Gola Rainforest National Park and Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary.
Kenema's character is shaped by its role as a crossroads for eastern Sierra Leone. Local markets, motorbike taxis and shops around central streets create a lively everyday atmosphere, and the city serves travellers moving between Freetown, Bo, Koidu and Kailahun.
As an administrative and educational centre, Kenema hosts government offices, Eastern Technical University and health institutions, alongside a trading economy closely tied to diamonds and agriculture. Visitors use it mainly as a service and transport base for forest reserves and eastern Sierra Leone.
For travellers, Kenema offers a genuine regional Sierra Leonean experience: market life, local food and access to some of the country's most important rainforest and wildlife areas. It is relevant to business visitors in mining, agriculture and development work, while leisure travellers come for nature and culture.

Best Time to Visit
