About Asir
Abha is the capital of the Asir Region in southwestern Saudi Arabia, set high in the Sarawat Mountains at around 2,270 metres above sea level. Its cooler, often misty climate and green mountain scenery make it a distinctive summer retreat and one of the kingdom's most popular highland destinations.
The city's historic forts, hilltop watchtowers and restored heritage buildings reflect its long role as a regional centre. Shadda Palace, built in 1927, now houses a museum of local crafts and household objects, while traditional stone and mud houses with painted wooden doors appear in villages across the surrounding highlands.
Visitors come for Asir National Park, the cable-car and mountain viewpoints around Jabal Sawda, and heritage villages such as Rijal Almaa. In the city itself, Al Muftaha Art Village, Lake Sadd and Abha Great Mosque offer a mix of culture, recreation and architecture, and seasonal festivals bring art, music and food to the centre.
Abha is also a regional hub for government, education and trade, anchored by King Khalid University and a growing tourism and hospitality sector. Local markets sell honey, produce, spices, textiles and handicrafts, while restaurants serve highland dishes and traditional breads.
With Abha International Airport connecting the city to major Saudi destinations and several regional international routes, Abha is accessible for leisure travellers seeking mountain air and for business visitors attending regional events.

Asir Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
Summer is the most popular season because Abha's mountain elevation brings noticeably cooler weather than much of Saudi Arabia, and the city hosts festivals and outdoor events. Spring and autumn are also pleasant for exploring Asir National Park and nearby highland villages.
How to Get Around
Abha is best explored by car or taxi, and ride-hailing is available in the city. Public transport is limited, so many visitors rent cars or book private drivers for trips to Jabal Sawda, Rijal Almaa and other mountain attractions.
Where to Stay
Hotels are concentrated in central Abha around the Corniche and near King Khalid University, with many offering mountain views. Khamis Mushait, immediately east of Abha, provides additional hotels, restaurants and shopping and is close to Abha International Airport.
Food & Drink
Abha's cuisine reflects the Asir highlands, with dishes such as areekah, honey, slow-cooked meats and local breads served in traditional restaurants. Central markets and cafés around the Corniche offer local produce, spices and relaxed dining.
