About Lemba
Lembá is a district on the western side of São Tomé Island in São Tomé and Príncipe, running from the Atlantic coast into the densely forested mountains of Obô Natural Park. The small town of Neves serves as the district capital, while fishing villages such as Santa Catarina preserve a calm, traditional rhythm of island life.
The area reflects São Tomé's layered plantation and fishing heritage. Former roças, or plantation estates, mark the landscape alongside cocoa, coffee and small-scale farms, while coastal communities have long depended on fishing. Portuguese is the official language, with local Creole widely spoken.
Lembá is best known for Pico de São Tomé, the country's highest point at 2,024 metres, which rises within Obô Natural Park. Forested slopes, waterfalls and rivers such as the Xufexufe make the interior appealing for hiking and nature travel, while the coast offers quiet beaches and dramatic ocean views.
Neves is the district's main commercial and transport hub, with a small seafront and access to local services. Santa Catarina, further south along the scenic coastal road, is a traditional fishing settlement where visitors can see daily catches and a slower, rural side of the island.
Lembá's economy centres on agriculture, fishing and small-scale trade, with modest but growing eco-tourism. For travellers, it offers a more natural and unhurried alternative to the capital, and it attracts hikers, nature lovers and independent visitors exploring western São Tomé.

Lemba Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from June to September is the most comfortable time to explore Lembá's coastal roads and mountain trails. December and January bring a shorter dry spell, while the wetter months from October to May can leave interior paths muddy and difficult.
How to Get Around
Shared taxis and minibuses run between São Tomé city and settlements such as Neves and Santa Catarina. Rental cars and motorcycles offer more flexibility, though roads are often narrow and uneven, especially inland.
Where to Stay
Many visitors base themselves in São Tomé city and make day trips west, while small guesthouses and eco-lodges near Neves provide stays closer to the coast. Santa Catarina offers simple local accommodation for travellers exploring the island's west.
