About Soufrière
Soufrière is a small historic town on the southwest coast of Saint Lucia, set between steep green hills and the Caribbean Sea. It is best known as the gateway to the Pitons, the twin volcanic peaks of Gros Piton and Petit Piton that form a UNESCO World Heritage Site and define some of the island's most dramatic scenery.
Founded by the French in the 18th century, Soufrière served as Saint Lucia's original capital before Castries took over that role. Its name comes from the nearby Sulphur Springs, and the town's French colonial past survives in its pastel wooden houses, old stone buildings, and the neo-Gothic church and waterfront square.
The main attractions lie just outside the compact town centre. Visitors come for the Sulphur Springs, often called the Caribbean's only drive-in volcano, the mineral-rich pools and changing colours of Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens, and waterfalls such as Toraille Waterfall. Hiking trails include Gros Piton and the gentler Tet Paul Nature Trail, while beaches such as Anse Chastanet and Sugar Beach sit close by.
Accommodation ranges from simple guesthouses in town to hillside resorts and plantation estates with Pitons views. The area's relaxed rhythm, Creole food, cocoa heritage and waterfront restaurants give Soufrière a distinctly local, slow-paced character.
For travellers, Soufrière is the natural base for exploring Saint Lucia's west coast and the island's most recognisable landscapes, combining outdoor adventure, wellness and heritage in one small but significant destination.
