About Vieux Fort
Vieux Fort is the main town at the southern tip of Saint Lucia and the arrival point for most international visitors, since Hewanorra International Airport sits just outside the centre. Known locally as "The New Frontier," it mixes a working port and agricultural surroundings with a slower-paced, genuinely Creole atmosphere that feels quite different from the busy capital, Castries.
The town's history reaches back to French colonial rule, when it was named after an 18th-century fort and developed as a centre of the sugar industry. During World War II, an American-built airfield known as Beane Army Airfield was established here and later extended to become today's Hewanorra International Airport.
From the Moule-a-Chique headland, visitors can climb to the 1912 lighthouse at the island's southernmost point for wide views over the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. Offshore, the protected Maria Islands—Maria Major and Maria Minor—are a nature reserve home to Saint Lucia's indigenous iguana and the tiny Saint Lucia racer snake, while nearby Sandy Beach (Anse des Sables) is a popular local shoreline.
Vieux Fort serves as a commercial and transport hub for the south, with a free trade zone, a seaport, the George Odlum National Stadium and industries such as Windward & Leeward Brewery. The town also connects travellers to nearby communities including Laborie, Choiseul and Micoud, and provides a practical base for reaching Soufrière and the Pitons.
Whether stopping over after a flight or staying to explore the south, visitors find a relaxed destination with local markets, Creole food, accessible beaches and an authentic slice of everyday Saint Lucian life.

Vieux Fort Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from December to May offers the most reliable beach weather, with warm, sunny conditions for exploring Vieux Fort and the Maria Islands. June to November brings more rain and higher humidity during the Atlantic hurricane season, though travel remains possible and prices are often lower.
How to Get Around
Hewanorra International Airport is only a short drive from Vieux Fort town, and minibuses, taxis and rental cars connect the south coast to Castries, Soufrière and nearby villages. For flexible sightseeing, a private transfer or chauffeur is useful on routes with limited public transport schedules.
Where to Stay
Vieux Fort itself has a small selection of hotels, guesthouses and airport-area accommodation, while neighbouring Laborie, Choiseul and Soufrière offer quieter villages and resort options along the southwest coast. Staying near the town suits early flights, beach days at Sandy Beach and trips to the Maria Islands.
Food & Drink
Local food in Vieux Fort centres on fresh seafood, grilled fish, roti and Creole staples such as green fig and saltfish, often served at casual roadside restaurants and markets. Nearby breweries and local rum producers add to the island's drinking culture, while fresh fruit juices reflect the area's farming roots.
