About Humacao
Humacao is a municipality on Puerto Rico's southeast coast, known as "La Perla del Oriente" (The Pearl of the East). It combines beaches, protected wetlands, a historic downtown and the Palmas del Mar resort community, giving the area a mix of coastal leisure and everyday Puerto Rican life.
Founded in 1722 and named for the Taíno chief Jumacao, Humacao grew from sugarcane, cattle ranching and coastal trade into a commercial hub for eastern Puerto Rico. Historic sites include the early-20th-century Casa Roig Museum and the downtown plaza around the cathedral, while the municipality still reflects its indigenous and colonial roots.
The Humacao Nature Reserve protects lagoons, mangroves and forests with hiking, cycling, kayaking and birdwatching. Palmas del Mar offers championship golf courses, a marina, beaches and waterfront dining, while the Punta Santiago fishing village provides seafood restaurants and boat access to Monkey Island (Cayo Santiago), a protected research island inhabited by rhesus macaques.
Humacao also serves as an eastern Puerto Rico commercial and educational center, anchored by the University of Puerto Rico at Humacao and nearby industrial parks. Festivals such as the Festival de Bomba y Plena and waterfront seafood restaurants add a strong local food and cultural calendar.
For travelers, Humacao offers a quieter base between San Juan and destinations such as El Yunque, Fajardo, Vieques and Culebra. Its mix of resorts, nature, meetings-friendly venues and easy highway access makes it practical for both leisure stays and business trips.
