About Carolina
Carolina is a city and municipality on Puerto Rico's northeastern coast, part of the San Juan metropolitan area. Known as the 'Land of Giants' (Tierra de Gigantes), it combines a traditional town center with the beachfront resort district of Isla Verde and the island's main international gateway, Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport.
The city was founded in 1857 as San Fernando de la Carolina, and its historic core still centers on the Plaza de Carolina and the San Fernando Rey parish church. Carolina is the birthplace of poet Julia de Burgos and baseball legend Roberto Clemente, whose legacy is honored at the Galería de los Gigantes along with other notable local figures.
Isla Verde is the most visited part of Carolina, known for its palm-lined beach, high-rise resorts, restaurants and lively nightlife. Inland, the town offers local shopping, plazas and museums such as the Museo del Niño, while nearby Piñones brings a laid-back coastal scene of mangrove-lined roads and open-air food kiosks serving fried snacks.
Beyond tourism, Carolina functions as a commercial and industrial hub of the San Juan area. Its airport location makes it a natural base for travelers, with quick access to Old San Juan, Condado and other metropolitan attractions via the Teodoro Moscoso Bridge and main highways.
For leisure visitors, Carolina offers beaches, dining and culture minutes from the airport; for business travelers, it provides convenient airport hotels, event venues and easy connections across the metro area.
